A magyarországi evangélikus lelkészképzés gyökerei Huszár Gál reformátor több mint 450 évre visszatekintő magyaróvári iskolájáig nyúlnak vissza. 1557-ben ebben a szellemben indult meg a soproni latin iskola, majd nyíltak meg a wittenbergi teológusképzés hatására a 17. században Pozsony, Eperjes, Késmárk főiskolái. A soproni Evangélikus Teológiai Akadémia a két világháború között a Pécsi Erzsébet Tudományegyetem Evangélikus Hittudományi Fakultásaként működött.
1950-ben a teológiai képzést leválasztották az egyetemekről, 1951-ben az intézményt, mint az Evangélikus Teológiai Akadémiáját Budapestre helyezték. A Magyar Országgyűlés 30/1990 sz. határozata Evangélikus Teológiai Akadémia néven államilag elismert hittudományi nem állami egyetemmé nyilvánította. Az intézmény hivatalos neve – az 1997. évi CXXVII. törvény alapján – 1998. január 1. óta Evangélikus Hittudományi Egyetem.
